Strange dwellings

What a strange place for a spider to live.......on top of an outdoor table........connecting flower pots.
This see-through sticky material ...... looks almost like saran wrap.

How can a spider live in such an odd-looking house? No floor, no door, no windows, no walls. And everything open, for all to see.

This little caterpillar is in the middle of spinning his cocoon. He chose such a strange place......in the little space between the back door and the brick wall....right on top of another caterpillar's cocoon.

It didn't take long before his cocoon was made. Now they're both asleep.....until?? I don't know how long this process is likely to take. Maybe some of my fellow gardeners (especially the ones who like bugs) will tell me.
I 've drawn circles around the two cocoons, so you can see them. Strange place for a house........right above the doorbell!

If Ella were to see those spider webs, she'd have a fit. She can spot them from a mile away, but she doesn't like them. Great photos.

Love your pictures. Spiders are facinating little critters. Hopefully they are helping to keep you bug free too. I keep telling myself they are keeping the ants down, we have plenty.

Hi Bev,
Jasmine is like that too. I don't know where she gets it from. There's nothing frightening about a spider web (unless there is a trapped insect inside waiting to be devoured!!)

Hi Celia, we have lots of ants too. Don't think the spiders are doing their job here. LOL!

Hi Wendy, looks like we are both looking deeper at bugs today. The caterpillar is destructive to plants commonly seen as bag worms on trees. You will more than likely find a sack full of them some where. Big hug have a great week end.

Interesting post, Wendy... It is true that some of our critters and bugs do build their homes in crazy places. You got some great photos.

Hope you are having a good week.
Hugs,
Betsy

I hope none of your visitors miss the doorbell and accidentally disturb the cocoons by mistake--what a strange place for them! Spiders seem to like my front porch for web-making; every time I come in from outside, especially after a heavy dew, I seem to be covered with sticky webs.

I wonder if the bugs are attracted to some kind of energy field near the door bell?

I don't know why the spider took up dwelling there.
But it must have some reason why it want to take up resident there.

Your flower are sure pretty.

Coffee is on.

Hi Wendy! Those are odd places for critters to make homes. I can do without both of them-thank you very much. I really don't like spiders of any kind. Ewwwwww!! And I thought the caterpillar looked like a bagworm too. I wouldn't let those cocoons mature if you don't want them eating your trees. Have a great weekend. :)

Oh my....... I was getting a bit worried thinking you were going to take me down a rat hole next! Those were really close up pictures, weren't they!
I am glad I'm not a spider with everything in the open! They would all be shocked!
I hopt you will keep the caterpillar cocoons until they hatch. Wonder what type of butterfly/moth they will turn into?

I have just caught up with your last post. Beautiful! Like the little ornaments in the pots!

I don't like spiders very much either, I think it's all those legs that give me the creeps. There was a big one in my kitchen sink yesterday morning, he went for a quick ride down the drain!
Keep an eye on the cocoons, I'd love to see the creature that emerges, so keep your camera handy.

I love spiders and I leave them alone when I can. I never ever kill spiders. They are beneficial. Unfortunately those are tent caterpillars, and I would get rid of them. Yes there are probably masses of them in a tree nearby.

My grandma tried to persuade me that abandoned spider webs in her garden were torn veils of garden fairies. Didn't matter - I never learned to appreciate creepy crawlies.

Hi Wendy....great observations and great photographs....

I often find odd things in the garden and near the house....I just leave them alone and let nature take its course.

I suppose the individual has to decide what suits them....I have read other comments, and see caterpillars may eat your trees. What a whole tree, surely not......it they eat some of it, does it really matter?????

Really like the shot of the spider web between your pots. I'm keeping an eye on a pretty cocoon now. I've never observed cocoons before and this could well be my first. It'd be interesting to see what colours emerge from the residents near your door-bell.

I have corners inside my house that look like the cocoons above your doorbell. I seldom see what made them but try and get rid of the as soon as possible. Outdoor cobwebs are very interesting.
